De l'utopie moderne à la dystopie postmoderne / From modern utopia to postmodern dystopia

The modern utopia was based upon the philosophy of Enlightenment. It was admitted that Reason would guide the world towards the technical and moral progress. During the XXth century, the advent of totalitarian regimes contributed to dismiss this optimistic vision. Still, the reconstruction of democracy after the Second World war fueled the hope of a better future. The welfare state, which was built in Europe, ensuring liberty, equality and fraternity among the citizens, appeared, to a large extent, as the fulfillment of the modern utopia. The fall of the former USSR seemed to provide the confirmation that such an ideal would be accepted by the whole world.
Unfortunately, this modern utopia was replaced by another one, the neoliberal postmodern utopiaThe postmodern vision excludes any constructive thinking. There are no foundations or absolute values. Everything is relative. This postmodern vision is in accordance with neoliberalism, which rejects any regulating principle. Whereas classical liberalism accepted a reciprocity no-harm principle, neoliberalism relies only  upon power relations, assuming a Darwinian logic of competition, leading to the hegemony of the winner. Competition is supposed to be more efficient than cooperation, as it gives the power to the stronger. No regulation can interfere with the Market, which is supposed to lead to the only acceptable optimum .This logic applies to the relations between nations, which are governed by the economic or military power. Military interventions are just an extension of financial wars. Thus, major issues such as the prevention of global warming, biodiversity, poverty, unemployment cannot be correctly addressed. Sustainable development is incompatible with such a system. Furthermore, geopolitical tensions which result from this policy prevent international cooperation.
This flat world, devoid of meaning and vision for the future, is now falling apart, but it is still difficult to know whether the present turmoil is leading us to a disaster or some kind of renewal.
