Slow Food / Terra Madre

Carlo Petrini has founded the Slow food movement, which aims at dropping standardized and globalised fast-foods, in order to find the authenticity of regional products and a gastronomy liberated from productivism and search for rapid profit . He explains that the Slow Food movement was created in 1986, after a very serious crisis of wine production in Italie, with the use of methanol in adulterated wine. As a consequence, he decided to reestablish what is "good, clean and just". The Slow Food movement succeeded in combining these three qualities, by enabling its followers to restore a healthy and tasty food. This "ecogastronomy" offers traditional dishes made from organic products. It helps to develop a new ecosystem which helps small regional producers, short distribution systems and restaurants which accept to propose such a food, while contributing to transform lifestyles. The Slow Food movement is now present within the whole world, including United States, where numerous farmer's markets have been created and where the taste for organic and local food is spreading. The movement fights against the use of pesticides and harmful additives. It helps people to regain the taste for authentic products by organizing festivities, during which they are promoted and can be tasted. It fights also for more justice and against malnutrition. Carlo Petrini has also created the Terra Madre network, which helps to develop links between all the members of this new ecosystem, at a global level. The mouvement Slow Food movement and the Terra Madre network thus demonstrate that citizen initiatives can contribute to deeply transform not only lifestyles but also the social and economic organisation.
