Le paysage adaptatif / The adaptative landscape

Darwin had explained the evolution of species through the mechanism of natural selection. Only the mutations able to increase the fitness for survival are kept. Thus, the evolution progresses towards an ever increasing level of adaptation and complexity, which enables the species to adapt better to new constraints imposed by the environment.  The evolution can be compared to the progression of hikers climbing a mountain. The level of the ground corresponds to the fitness level. This metaphor can be applied also to the evolution of the human society. The difference is that man can foresee at least some of the consequences of the decisions he takes and can therefore progress much more rapidly than through random walk. Still, his progression can be made difficult due to all uncertainties, which create a fog around him and by the wrong perceptions he can get through a representation system which is not adapted to the situation. A further difficulty is the fact that mere surviving is not his goal and that he has other motivations, among which greed often dominates. The increase in complexity can lead to a loss of resilience. Therefore, it is not always the right direction which is selected.
