We are not able to predict for the future, as the world is too complex and too sensitive to parameters we cannot assess. Still, we need to prepare the best future we can and anticipate the changes under way. Therefore, rather than trying to predict the future, the only effective attitude is to create new opportunitities and act for changing the world. The future "has to be invented rather than discovered". Such a process of creation of the future involves two steps: imagine and create new options, which can be used for transforming the world we live in, and then define a possible way for implementing these options. It can be done at various levels within a family, an enterprise, a nation or the whole world. Creating the future involves "reinventing the world".
L’avenir est en grande partie imprévisible, parce que le monde extérieur est trop complexe pour qu’il soit possible de prévoir toutes ses évolutions et du fait que nous ignorons les intentions de nombreux acteurs susceptibles d’influencer le destin collectif. C’est particulièrement vrai dans le domaine géopolitique : il est impossible d’anticiper toutes les décisions d’un dictateur, qui peut décider de précipiter un conflit ou d’un terroriste, qui veut monter un attentat. Les événements que nous pouvons prévoir le mieux sont ceux que nous décidons nous-mêmes. Dans ces conditions, la meilleure façon d’appréhender le futur consiste à adopter une attitude proactive et agir pour transformer le monde. Gaston Berger disait déjà que « l’avenir est moins à découvrir qu’à inventer ».
