Le boson et le chapeau mexicain / The boson and the mexican hat

The experimental discovery of the Higgs (or BEH) boson in july 2012, with the help of the CERN hadron collider, has been a landmark of last year. Englert and Higgs have just received the Nobel prize for their work concerning the BEH boson. This particle remained to be discovered for proving the validity of the "standard model". The BEH boson plays a central role in this model, as only the particles which interact with the BEH boson, acquire a mass. The book recently published (in French) by Gilles Cohen-Tannoudgi and Michel Spiro presents an overall picture of our knowledge. Both authors are highly competent. Still, their explanations of the BEH mechanism, linked with the fact that the auto-interaction potential of the field has the shape of a  Mexican hat, which can lead to a break of the symmetry remain difficult to follow for the non-specialist. It corresponds of course to the difficulty of translating in plain language the mathematical language of modern physics. Still, the challenge remains to overcome.
