La technologie sauvera-t-elle le monde?/Will technology save the world?

Technology has so far been able to thwart the gloomy predictions of Malthus. A much larger population than during  his life was able to survive, but also to improve its standard of living in impressive although unequal proportions. The achievements of technology have given rise to hyper-technological utopias which are presented as the future of humanity. The idea that science and technology will eventually be able to meet all needs in the world to come remains a powerful myth. It would be dangerous, however, to rely on technological progress, hoping that it will solve all the problems of humanity. The limits of growth, which has continued to this day, may be close, as was announced by the Meadows ReportTranshumanism promises to increase human capacities, to eliminate diseases, to conquer the Universe and even to one day achieve immortality. Carrying the hope of a future happiness, mixing promises and mirages, science and technology replace religion in its role of guide and recourse in all the vicissitudes of life. However, despite all the achievements, scientific and technical progress plays an ambiguous role. While offering humanity the hope of overcoming the challenges it faces, it also carries heavy threats. After liberating the human being from physical labor, technology is now taking away much of the intellectual work left to him. The rapid progress of digital technologies foreshadows the advent of an artificial super-intelligence, more efficient, at least on certain levels, than human intelligence. While the complexity of the technical devices becomes difficult to control, the resilience of the technical-economic system is constantly weakening. The very high level of connection established between all human activities increases the risk of propagation of a collapse process, capable of rapidly affecting the entire building. The impact of human activities on the environment reaches a level that is less and less compatible with the preservation of ecosystems. Finally, perhaps the most serious threat is the potential use of weapons of mass destruction, chemical, biological or nuclear, which have proliferated around the world. The threat associated with these terrifying weapons is rarely mentioned. The monster remains for the moment lurking in the shadows, but could be unleashed in a short time. To ward off these new perils, humanity should progress in wisdom at a pace comparable to that of technical progress. However, it does not seem at all certain that human nature has changed much since the dawn of humanity. Intelligence, which is supposed to guide humanity towards progress and well-being, remains, as at the beginning of history, at the service of the will to power. According to the objectives assigned to it, technology is capable of the best and the worst. It can help cure diseases or better feed the human population. It can also help to squander the Earth's resources to accomplish such ostentatious and futile tasks as sending a Tesla roadster into space.

Homo Deus

"Homo Deus", the last book of the Israeli writer Yuval Noah Hariri, will probably enjoy the same success as his previous book, "Sapiens". While "Sapiens" had the ambition to recapitulate the past history of humanity, "Homo Deus" aims at describing its future. The book raises good questions, but is often irritating, because of its schematic and sometimes simplistic content. It is easy to read, which is probably one of the rules to follow to get a "bestseller", but so simple that it sometimes gives the impression to be written, not for adults, but for teenagers, to whom is explained for example the notion of humanism. The author sees the future through the lens of the new NBIC technologies. Is it with the aim of conciliating the favor of Mark Zuckerberg, who contributed to the success of his previous work? This leads him to define the expectations of humanity, in terms that are similar to those of transhumanism. The human being is going to defeat all diseases and his main concern will be to achieve immortality. His aspiration for well-being will be filled by advances in biochemistry. The human species will be transformed through genetic eugenics, technological prosthesis and increased knowledge. This technological optimism prompts the author to imagine a universal peace, wars becoming unnecessary. It ignores all the victims caused by current conflicts, linked to the development of increasingly lethal arms, as well as the heavy threats that weigh on world peace. At times, appears an alternative point of view. Yuval Noah Harari, who has been marked by Buddhist influences, brings, sometimes, a deeper perspective. He raises two fundamental interrelated questions. The first concerns the fate of farm animals, of which he speaks with a great sensitivity. The second raises the issue of consciousness. Life appears as closely associated with consciousness. What place should we leave now and in the future to this notion, still badly defined and misunderstood by science? Unfortunately, the author remains riveted to a materialistic, deterministic and simplistic scheme. Science will control consciousness as all other parameters of human existence. The new religion will be related to the 'Data', that will dominate all aspects of human life. This Data Religion or "Dataism" will encompass everything. Such an outcome leaves no room for creativity, imagination and spirituality., as it considers only algorithms and digital data. Still, is this prospect that suggests the book, without recognizing that it is probably the best way to fall into a new totalitarianism.

What utopias for to-morrow?

The neoliberal globalization, which confers to the Market all the powers of decision proposes no vision for the future nor project of transformation of the world. The primacy of the economy and finance seems incompatible with any project of social renewal. The result is a feeling of frustration and pessimism, leading to a fear of a future in which it will be harder to live than before. More than ever, new forms of Utopia and new visions for the future become necessary, to overcome such a feeling and to be able to engage in the construction of a better future. Three types of utopias can be considered:
- Technological utopias are the most common at present. Transhumanism promises to overcome all diseases, to leverage human abilities, ultimately to achieve immortality. Human beings will be able to cross the physical limits of their existence on Earth and to disseminate colonies within the whole Universe on the exo-planets with can sustain life. New technologies of information and communication (NTIC) have made possible instant exchanges between all the inhabitants of the planet. Now, after having freed the human being of the physical work, technology seems ready to perform also the intellectual work, which until now remained within the realm only of human beings. One of the most fascinating technological utopias, deals with the deployment of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) far exceeding human capacities. This would lead to a still accelerated progress, a kind of Singularity, with consequences which seem impossible to imagine right now. It might result also in the replacement of human beings by machines for most important decisions.
- Social and political utopias are essentially driven by protest movements, such as those of the Indignados in Spain or Occupy Wall Street in the United States. These movements would like to build new forms of democracy, such as direct democracy or participatory democracy. Other forms of Utopia involve the transformation of the economy, to move towards new forms of a solidarity economy or to build a fair organization of the North-South trade Globalization is the object of various utopias. Some advocate the establishment of a world government. Others, on the contrary are considering a relocation of the activities within areas that would find a broad autonomy. Digital technologies allow to consider again the old anarchist utopia of local self-government municipalities, linked together by a loose form of coordination, for all the decisions affecting the whole community These utopias contradict the logic of neo-liberal globalization. Therefore, without a deep transformation of the current neo-liberal system, they remain difficult inapplicable for the moment.
- Cultural utopias which are particularly important in the current context, are presently most lacking. Society needs to develop a new world of imagination and new forms of spirituality, in order to escape from the dehumanized world to which may lead technology. New aspirations are emerging. Ecology. represents one of the major areas of transformation. Beyond a simple desire to protect the environment, emerges a new form of relationship with nature. Nature  holds a spiritual and sacred significance, which is recognized by the deep ecology movement  and the introduction of the concept of Gaia. Ecology is frequently associated with spirituality, to form an ecospirituality. This sacredness of nature is one of the most characteristic cultural trends of contemporary society. Other forms of spirituality are developing in response to the need for personal development and inner harmony.  Religions, far from disappearing, occupy a central place in today's world. The violence generated by fundamentalism is favored by military conflicts, which exacerbate hostile reactions. It can be prevented by working on the restoration of peace. A spiritual renewal and a rise in the level of consciousness, might help to prevent hatred and violence. The construction of a culture rooted in the interiority of the person becomes an imperative to escape the enslavement of human beings by machines. Intangible assets of cultural interest can also limit the compulsive need to consume still more. Two factors may contribute to achieve the profound cultural transformation which is required . The need for each to achieve inner harmony is the first of them. To achieve a deeper level of consciousness is a prerequisite for escaping to the condition of a machine, only subjected to physicochemical forces. A second factor is the will to renew the social link, to build a society of co-operation and sharing, open to empathy and altruism.
