Les années fastes / The fat years

In his book, the "Fat years", Chan Koonchung describes a dystopia, so close to reality that the reader can wonder if he describes what China might become or China today. The ambiguity is well accepted by the author, as the future he is considering is located in 2013. China is presented as fully successful in its economic development. It has outpassed all other countries and the inhabitants feel happy. But this success is accompanied by a deep amnesia and a refusal to consider any disturbing issues. Happiness is strictly controlled. A full month of the year 2011 has disappreared. Chan Koonchung has written his book in Hong-Kong, but lives now in Beijing. His book is quite remarkable, as it helps us to understand the framework or "worldview", within which  China, the great power of tomorrow, is evolving.

Les choses à venir / Things to Come H.G.Wells

The British science-fiction film "Things to Come", produced by Alexander Korda in 1936, represents a remarkable exercise of anticipation. It demonstrates the talent of the writer H.G. Wells who has adapted the screenplay from his own novels written in 1931 and 1936. The film begins with the expectation of a possible war which occurs suddenly. The war leads to a new "Dark Age", during which a major portion of the population is killed by a deadly epidemy. The world emerges from this chaos and builds a new technically advanced civilization. But, soon, this new civilization is threatened by the revolt of people who do not accept the new order which has been established and want the  progress to stop. In this film, through his visionnary thinking, H.G. Wells illustrates vividly the permanent debate about progress. Will the progress liberate mankind or will it destroy it? The film shows that all depends on the attitude and wisdom of men. It shows that no progress can be considered as permanently acquired and that civilization undergoes through a permanent forward and backward surge. Utopia and dystopia alternate for describing "Everytown"

Is dystopia the future of utopia?

Since antiquity, thinkers, architects and philosophers  have tried to imagine the city of the future. Plato  was one of the first great thinkers to imagine the ideal city of the future. Thomas More coined the word of Utopia in 1516. A century later, Campanella described the "City of the Sun", hoping to achieve his project through the progress of science. During the XIXth century, socialist utopias such as those described by Charles Fourier or Saint-Simon flourished. When the fascist and communist utopias were  implemented, a wide gap appeared between the "radiant future" which was promised and the bleak reality. Already in 1920, in his novel "We", the russian writer Zamiatine presents a society entirely controlled by the state, through a system similar to the Panopticon concept of Jeremy Bentham. In his novel, "Brave New World", Aldous Huxley had in mind the fascist system. In George Orwell's "1984", society is under the control of the "Big brother".This shift from utopias to dystopias is characteristic of the moral crisis of present times. It is now difficult to think about the future in positive terms. Dostoievsky had announced already a long time ago, the failure of the "Crystal palace". Human psychology does not fit with a purely rational way of life, not taking into account human aspirations for liberty. Dystopia can be more fascinating than utopia. The punk culture with its taste for trash illustrates this fascination. For those who accept such a situation, it also offers opportunities for striving and surviving.
