Many reasons support the idea that our present consumption of meat should come to an end:
- Meat consumption increases the risk of cancer and heart disease.
- It represents a very heavy burden for the environment (pollution and high consumption of resources). Extrapolating the present Western mode of nutrition to the whole world would bring this burden to a highly unacceptable level.
- Alternative solutions become available for the production of proteins (micro-algae, transformation of insects.
- The most imperative reason is ethical. Animals are obviously conscious and sentient beings. Therefore their life and well-being have to be protected, especially in the case of the most evolved animals, such as superior mammals.
It is not what happens now and the share of meat increases at the world level. It is perceived as a progress by most populations. Food is narrowly related to the culture and the habits acquired during infancy evolve only slowly. In this area as in many others, a cultural change is the first step. Still, we can think that in the future, human beings will observe with surprise and horror the cruelty of our time.
